I've just recently watched the alarming documentary Forks Over Knives -a focus on the reversal of prevailing diseases caused by the SAD diet. The documentary highlights profound studies that proves how diseases such as diabetes and heart disease typically treated by drugs can be reversed and even eradicated by simply consuming life promoting foods.

The Succulent Ovaries ~ Figs
Fall is in season and so are figs! This overlooked fruit probably got a bad rap from being widely introduced as Fig Newtons -the dry and hollow flavored fig stuffed snack bars. Dark, shapely, succulent, and fleshy like a fine woman, figs are anything but dry and devoid of flavor. This fruit is unique in that its edible structure is actually stem tissue. The fig fruit is an inverted flower with both the male and female flower parts enclosed in stem tissue. Get this -the so-called seeds are nothing more than unfertilized ovaries that failed to develop. Fig is naturally rich in many health benefiting phyto-nutrients (plant derived nutrients necessary for sustaining life), anti-oxidants, and vitamins, which include iron, calcium, potassium, vitamin E, C, K, and at least 5 different types of B Vitamins. Papaya Power | The Papaya Lava
Loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, this bountiful fruit tree was known as the sacred Tree of Life by the ancient Mayan Civilization. And no wonder. When cut in half it resembles a large vagina -so moist, so bright, so filled with life giving properties. Ever heard that a food which resembles a body part assists in the maintenance of that body part? Well in this case, if consumed regularly, the papaya helps to increase the female libido. Of course! Papayas are rich in antioxidants like vitamins A and C. Papain -the papaya's powerful enzyme- is what makes this fruit a highly sought after commodity. It's extracted and put into capsules for use as a digestive aid for proteins, fats, and starches. When ripe, papayas contain more beta-carotine than carrots, and more vitamin C than kiwi fruit. As mentioned in the avocado post carotene is converted into vitamin A in our body, which does wonders for our largest organ -the skin! Papayas are abundant in bioflavonoids, which benefit the immune system and help prevent allergic reactions. An excellent source of electrolytes, papaya minerals include potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Having trouble hitting the potty regularly? The fiber from both fresh and dried papaya helps eliminate constipation.

Yo Gabba NO! There's some GAS in My Tummy!!
Let's imagine you decide to sit down to a meal and you eat spaghetti and meatballs with cheese, peanut butter crackers followed by ice berg lettuce? Bizarre i know, but some people actually eat this way! How do you suppose you'd feel afterwards? It's amazing that more than half of this country's population cannot fathom eating the proper foods in the proper order to avoid popping Tums after each meal. Now let's suppose you had some leftovers of those exact combinations mentioned before and you threw it in the trash. How long do you suppose it'll be before you begin to smell the contents of that trash? Are you screwing your face? That's because you can relate and that's a good sign. Awareness is the first step. Now how do you suppose your insides smell; especially if you're constipated?! Phew!

LIVER TUNE UP | DAY 1

It looks like pina~colada but i definitely taste the garlic. Oh by the way, i only used 1 garlic clove. I figured i'd work my way up to 2 cloves. So i've just downed half of the liver detox drink and i'm feeling anxious. Surprisingly the taste was pretty mild; all ingredient flavors were evenly distributed. Last night i thought of ALL the sweet, spicy, fried, decadent foods i'd want to eat catered by my good friend The Sassy Chef who makes damn good vegan soul food! I wanted everything off her menu; something like an 8 course meal but a table for 1! It was the fact that i was finally starting my cleanse and properly this time, that my brain began having a conniption at the thought of eating less and absolutely NO sugar. Well after swallowing the first of the liver tonic, i just want to do right.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, N'EST PAS?

I'm thinking about eating food and it's quarter to 12 at night. I'm also thinking that if i had a man, i'd be in bed right now (momentary thought). But instead, i'm thinking about my long TO DO list and eating fattening sugary foods. I won't though. This has me thinking about how obsessed we are with eating. We eat mindlessly to fill a void in most cases. So it has me thinking about building a personal discipline around food intake. Most people look at me and just assume i eat right all the time and that i work out often. I don't. I'm blessed with genes that work for me, but in order to maintain that i have to make food my medicine. I have to eat to live. I'm realizing that those nasty habits like eating just because, are more challenging to STOP the older i get. As part of my Food As Medicine Campaign, i will begin my personal quest with first, finding the cure to tame my sugar addiction. And second, decreasing my food intake for each meal that i eat. I'm looking for balance and clarity. I know this is how i'll find it. Follow along.

((((((((((:TASTE THE RAINBOW:))))))))))

Chef Claiborne of Chocolate SaMosa gives a colorful healthy eating demonstration at Capitol Hill Day School. The message of the moment -incorporating colors into our daily nutrition to enhance and maintain vibrancy, alertness, and stamina. Of course all that was said in children's language -make sure you eat all the colors of the rainbow so that you can become SUPER KIDS!!! Prior to the presentation, one child informed me that kids don't eat the foods i had to share. By the end of the presentation, kids were lining up to sample a sprig of cilantro. It's always fun interfacing with children. They're so filled with stories and liveliness.

Back to Basics

What's fresh, dark, and firm? This post is ALL about the greens baby!! Today i woke up with heaviness and after a good cry i felt like i needed to inject myself with everything pleasant. Pleasant music, pleasant dancing, pleasant thoughts, pleasant foods. Pleasant music. Check! Pleasant food. Check! I have yet to arrive on the dance floor and then of course when i do, all thoughts will cease and eventually will become laced with aligned intention once the dance subsides and the thoughts return. SO onto the food. I wanted to write this post to share with you all what my greens told me as i was washing them. Yes i said it. Food speaks to me and that is why we have good relations. Anyway, as i was washing my kale, feeling heavy and sad, it said "be gentle with me, massage me softly, and hey, smile while you're at it." Midway into making my super raw kale i felt a shift -a very clear shift. As i massaged my kale and added my spices and watched it soften between my fingers, i also began to feel lighter, softer, and more pleasant. I was smiling before i had finished my dish. I was even humming.<<

Testing Tasting 123

Ok so I wasn’t going to tell on myself trying to be the crowd pleaser. But, I did it. I ate a biscuit. It was vegan. It was my creation. It was GREAT! But those are not the reasons I am sharing this post with you. After 3 whole days of consuming only raw foods, the pleasure of consuming a biscuit wasn’t so pleasurable. Even before I swallowed the last bit of the biscuit, I felt as if I were chewing raw dough. To tell you the truth, once it's in your mouth, it’s not too far from it. I was chewing and thinking to myself ‘I may as well be chewing raw dough’. Almost immediately after, I was passing gas and spitting out mucus. I think it’s accurate to say that I ate a ball of mucus. Sounds nasty doesn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what it becomes once consumed. It also breaks down to a simple sugar, which eventually is stored as fat if not burned off. Along with the top heavy hitters Candida, eczema, and constipation, mucus is a major contributor to overall decline in body wellness. So was it worth it? YES! First hand experience and direct results is pretty persuasive in making decisive decisions. The amazing part was being the silent witness to my own process. Watching myself do it as if I had no control over my actions. Yes. It was exactly like that. That’s the addiction –not stopping yourself when you know it’s not for you to begin with. Clear out mucus. Welcome forth hydration. Detox through juicing is on the horizon followed by refreshing rejuvenation recipes. Stay tuned.

Withdrawing From Withdrawals

Man i want a biscuit, veggie stir fry with brown rice, some peanut butter!!! I don't care what it is as long as it's cooked. LOL. I would say that 99.9% of my thoughts today have been centered on eating odd combinations of various cooked foods just for the hell of it. Two activities make my second day consuming only raw foods pretty challenging -feeding my toddler cooked foods made by yours truly and shopping at the Co-op. Fortunately for me, i had plenty things to cross off my TO DO LIST. So with only 2 days into my detox and raw food journey, i begin to notice a few things. First, my thoughts are consumed by consuming cooked foods; mostly starchy sugary foods. I hear voices (you know what i mean) telling me that licking the left over peanut butter off the spoon isn't so bad and finishing my son's lunch is better than being wasteful. Sigh. Being mindful of my thoughts was like pressing the rewind button on a cassette player too numerous to count. When i did eat however, i took my time in order to take in less food. Afterwards i felt balanced and my need for rest was due to another cause than contracting the itis. Not surprising to me, i am no more or no less tired than what i usually am. I have major detoxing to do. Before i am able to immediately feel the amazing effects of raw and living foods/drinks then i must prepare my body through detox. Period. I also notice that i am barely farting. There's a surprise, lol. I notice that even though i'm not doing too well on my water intake, my mouth isn't dry. And lastly, i am not spitting out mucus every 10 minutes or so. Again, no surprise there. If you knew me, you'd be proud of me. In my past experiences, each time i decide i'm going to do a cleanse, I'm usually sneaking in something for one inessential reason or another and the cycle continues. I need to feel, see, and know the person i can be under the nurturing influences of living foods. Day 3 here i come!

The Body Talks
When you fart, do you find yourself running away from it or wanting to? Well, the stench came from inside of your body. Think about that for a moment. Did you get a good whiff? How would you enjoy walking around smelling like the fart that came from inside of you on the outside? YIKES! And if your fart smells that bad, then your bowel movement isn’t too far from it. DOUBLE YIKES!! Please pay attention!!! This is your body’s way of speaking out. It's is a signal. A red flag. A call for help that something toxic is occurring in your body. Imagine an overflow of hot, sticky, and smelly trash in your kitchen. More than likely, you'd take the time to notice, eliminate, and sanitize it to begin anew.
Why am i writing this post? Because i need someone or something in my corner cheering me on as i move forward with my detox and raw food journey. It's going to be my e-spiration for getting my act together. I also love to share my culinary pizzas with all of you and so this way you can tune in, learn, and hopefully also become inspired to STOP plugging your systems with processed, acidic, and indigestible foods. I am a fledgling with much to learn. Let the healing begin!
